Estimates of lactation curve parameters for Bonsmara and Nguni cattle using the weigh-suckle-weigh technique

Abstract: Milk production accounts for about 60% of the variation in weaning weight and is therefore considered an economically important trait in beef production. However, milk production data is not routinely available in beef improvement programmes and therefore weaning weight is used as a proxy for milk production. Despite the importance of milk production in beef cattle, little research has been done to evaluate the milk production potential of South African indigenous beef cattle. The objective of this study was t… Show more

“…However, across the two production systems, the indigenous cows (i.e., Mashona) produced the lowest milk yield (i.e., 638-704 kg per lactation) compared to either crossbreds or exotic. Similarly, Maiwashe et al [79] reported that the daily peak yields for the Bonsmara and Nguni were 10 kg and 7 kg, respectively. Myburgh et al [67] found that the nutrient composition (i.e., proximate and casein) of the indigenous tropical breeds was comparable to that of European beef breeds.…”

“…Little information is available in terms of milk yield in the South African beef sector. A peak milk yield of 10 kg/day was used for medium cows, in accordance with previous research done on Bonsmara cows (Maiwashe et al, 2013). The calf weight of small-, medium-, and large-framed breeds was assumed to be 20, 30, and 40 kg, respectively.…”

“…The Wood's curve, an incomplete gamma function often used to model lactation yield in dairy cattle Boujenane and Hilal, 2012;Maiwashe et al, 2013), was shown to appropriately model viremia profiles in PHGC trials 1 to 8 (Islam et al, 2013):…”
