and completed residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at The Ohio State University. Dr. Atchison has been in practice at academic medical centers for more than 20 years, serving on the faculty at the University of Kentucky and University of Florida before his appointment at Northwestern University. A recognized teacher and researcher in the field of pain management and rehabilitation, he has presented courses, lectures, and workshops nationally and internationally on pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies, care of spinal injuries, and spinal manipulation. Dr. Atchison has led and participated in many research projects, including several funded by the National Institutes of Health. He has authored numerous research papers and book chapters, and he serves as a peer reviewer for the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has been a member of the editorial boards of the Supplement Policy Statement Standards for Supplements to the Journal of Managed Care PharmacySupplements to the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy are intended to support medical education and research in areas of clinical practice, health care quality improvement, or efficient administration and delivery of health benefits. “…It is improbable that living in a particular residential area itself causes upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage, but rather that more deprived people have risk factors that more affluent people have been able to avoid. According to my findings if the whole population experienced the same levels of risk as the most affluent, up to 10,000 admissions costing a total of at least £20 million ($34 million), 42 and over 1000 deaths could be prevented each year in England. Aim. Analysis of the treatment results in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding with the use of endoscopic and surgical methods of hemostasis.Methods. Analysis of the treatment results in 421 patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding from the urgent surgical department of City Clinical Hospital №7 of Kazan was conducted.Results. Endoscopic methods of hemostasis in bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract (argon plasma coagulation, combined prolonged infiltration hemostasis with the use of 6% solution of polyglucin with mafusol, irrigation with the solution «Hemolab», ligation of the esophageal veins and Danis stent implantation) were applied to 404 patients. All patients simultaneously received conservative treatment. When using the methods of endoscopic hemostasis mentioned above in patients with bleeding from upper gastrointestinal tract the efficiency was achieved in 87.9% of cases. It was the highest when using combined endoscopic methods. Recurrent acute bleeding was diagnosed in 30 (7.1%) cases. Majority of the patients with recurrent bleeding suffered from gastric ulcer and/or duodenal ulcer (21 patients). In all 30 patients with recurrent bleeding surgical intervention with the author’s technique was performed.Conclusion. The efficacy of endoscopic methods of hemostasis in bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract, especially their combined use, was revealed; differentiated approach to the use of endoscopic and surgical techniques of hemostasis depending on the source of bleeding and its intensity is required.
