ObjectiveRecently, an increasing number of Korean male conscripts have been retiring because of military maladjustment despite the presence of qualifying medical and psychological screening tests in the Korean army. These problems suggest the presence of a common personality problem. To further examine this possibility, the present study used Cloninger's psychobiological model to investigate the temperament and character of soldiers suffering from military maladjustment.MethodsSeventy-nine maladjusted male conscripts and eighty-seven controls enrolled at the 1596th unit from April 2011 to June 2012 participated in the present study. To measure participant personality, we used the Korean version of the Temperament and Character Inventory, Revised-Short. We used logistic regression analysis to examine the association between TCI-RS scores and risk of military maladjustment.ResultsThe maladjustment group had a lower rank, socioeconomic status, education level, and a shorter duration of military service than the control group. The harm avoidance and self-transcendence scores were significantly higher in the maladjustment group, with lower scores for reward dependence, persistence, self-directedness, and cooperativeness scores. However, of these measures, only low cooperativeness was associated with an increased risk of military maladjustment.ConclusionThese results suggest that a low level of cooperativeness can predict military inadequacy. Maladjusted male conscripts may have different personality characteristics from normals. To validate our results, further follow-up or cohort studies with a larger sample will be required.

A lo largo de esta última década el interés por el estudio de la Inteligencia Emocional y su relación con la salud ha aumentado notablemente. El presente artículo tiene el objetivo de presentar los resultados de los estudios más relevantes que relacionan la Inteligencia Emocional medida como rasgo con las condiciones de salud física y mental. Los resultados indican que niveles altos de Inteligencia Emocional están significativamente relacionados con una buena salud mental mientras que niveles bajos de Inteligencia Emocional se relacionan con ciertos trastornos psicológicos. Del mismo modo, la Inteligencia Emocional parece jugar un papel moderador sobre los síntomas y enfermedades médicas. Futuros estudios deberían profundizar en el conocimiento de la relación entre Inteligencia Emocional y variables psicológicas implicadas en la salud mental (por ejemplo, dimensiones de personalidad, conducta prosocial, etc.) y entre Inteligencia Emocional y enfermedades médicas (por ejemplo, dolor crónico, cáncer, etc.).

This study investigated the mental health of military transport personnel in the Western Sichuan Plateau of China, and factors that correlate with their mental health.The Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) was used to investigate the mental health status of the subjects. Their scores were compared with the national and military norm in China. Demographic factors were analyzed for associations with SCL-90 scores.Psychological problems were detected in 28.90% of total 1076 male officers and soldiers surveyed. The SCL-90 scale somatization score of these servicemen was higher than the national and military norms in China, while other scores were comparable. The reported physical health symptoms and being an only child were strongly associated with the SCL-90 scores.The mental health of military transport personnel in the China Western Sichuan Plateau should receive more attention.

Abstract: The mental health status of army recruits is closely related to their childhood environment, education level, parental relationship, and emotional intelligence. These factors should be considered by mental health workers, to help new army recruits adapt to the new environment.
