Ferula L. is represented by 23 taxa in Turkish flora. Most of the species are known as "Caksır" and roots are used as aphrodisiac in Anatolia. The aim of this study is to investigate the cytotoxic potential of roots of twelve different Ferula L. species distributing in Anatolia on prostate cancer cell line PC-3. Three extracts with different polarity were prepared from grounded roots of plants by ultrasonic solvent extraction. WST assay was performed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of extracts. High cytotoxic activity was observed in F. elaeochytris, F. drudeana chloroform extracts and F. szowitsiana hexane extract (IC50: 3.21±0.24µg/ml, 5.92±0.53µg/ml, 8.03±0.51µg/ml respectively) whereas methanol extracts of all species had no cytotoxic activity. F. tingitana chloroform extract induced high proliferation in dose dependent manner. A daucane ester "ferutinin" content was evaluated among the extracts by UPLC and it is found in highest concentrations in F. tenuissima and F. halophila hexane extracts (167380 µg/g and 157160 µg/g respectively). Although there is not a direct relationship between ferutinin content and cytotoxicity on PC-3, F. elaeochytris, F. drudeana, F. szowitsiana and F. tenuissima can be good candidates for the further studies for finding lead phytochemical compounds for prostate cancer treatment.

This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the medicinal, folkloric and traditional culinary uses of Ferula species, related products and extracts in different countries together with the description of recently isolated new components and the related bioactivities. The phytochemical composition of the essential oils (EOs), oleo-gum-resin (OGR) and the non-volatile fractions obtained from several endemic and indigenous Ferula species is also reported. A special emphasis is placed on their unusual components, i.e. sulfur-containing volatiles from the EOs and the new phytochemicals with mixed biogenetic origins. More than 180 chemical constituents (excluding common essential oils components), including sulfur-containing metabolites, terpenoids, coumarins, sesquiterpene coumarins, etc., as both aglycones and glycosides, are reported, along with their occurrence and biological activities when available. A large number of new secondary metabolites, belonging to different classes of natural products possessing interesting biological activities, from the antiproliferative to the anti-inflammatory to the neuroprotective ones, among the others, have been recently found in the Ferula genus. Several of these phytochemicals are exclusive to this genus; therefore may be considered chemotaxonomic markers. All these aspects are extensively discussed in this review.

Histochemical analysis of medicinal plants and raw materials is necessary to study the localization of various chemical substances and their metabolic products in plant tissues. The article presents the results of histochemical analysis of leaves, flowers, stems, fruits, and roots of Ferula songarica. Since ancient times, Ferula has been used in folk medicine by native people of Central Asia, Iran, China, India, etc. to treat various diseases. Aim. Identifying the localization of specific individual secondary metabolites in plant tissues of the aerial and underground parts of Ferula songarica grown in the Karaganda region. Materials and methods. Ferula songarica raw material samples were placed in Strauss-Fleming solution; the tissue cross-sections were sliced manually with a razor blade Histochemical reactions were carried out to detect and to identify essential oils, starch, phenolic acids, flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, polysaccharides, and alkaloids. The methods of the State Pharmacopoeia of the Republic of Kazakhstan allowed revealing the localization of biologically active substances. Micropreparations were viewed with a Biomed-4 microscope and photographed with the Altamy Studio Program. Results. Light microscopic histochemistry allowed determining the localization of biologically active substances in the studied plant raw materials. The presence of phenolic acids, flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, polysaccharides, alkaloids, and essential oils as well as the absence of starch were established. Conclusion. For the first time, the histochemical tests were applied to examine the localization of Ferula songarica tissues’ secondary metabolites. The results of the histochemical research can be used to authenticate, identify, and standardize the aerial and underground parts of Ferula songarica.
