Esterase D: Some Population and Formal Genetical Data

Abstract: 562 healthy blood donors and 65 families with 149 offspring were typed for esterase D (EsD). The observed allele frequencies are in good agreement with those determined in other Caucasian populations. The rare variant EsD3was found in a blood donor who transmitted it to his daughter. The observed segregation ratios in our family material showed no deviation from expectation.

“…The low frequencies were observed in African populations and among Europeans living north of the Mediterranean region [2,3,8,13,15,23,24]. The highest EsD2 gene frequencies were found in Lapland, Japan and South Asia [4,8,9,14,24], In our investigation we have found that Ashkenazi and North African Jews present frequencies similar to those of European populations.…”

“…[14] In the present screening an additional sample with the rare E sD 3 allele was discovered in a Jewish Greek family. This phenotype has been described so far in 3 families: 2 from Germany and l from Italy [1,2,15], In a recent report by H arris el al. [7] it has been calculated that for any single locus one may expect that between 1 and 2 individuals per thousand will be heterozygotes for a rare allele determining an electrophoretic variant.…”
