“…At the same time, the rapid influx of visitors over the span of fewer than five years makes this region an excellent field ‘laboratory’ where we can observe and study such impacts on a fragile environment under increasing recreational pressure. Documenting and understanding traces of human activities in the landscape is even more important now, as such fragile environments as high mountains and polar regions will come under increasing anthropogenic pressure in the future related to: (1) increased popularity of outdoor‐oriented recreation and its associated increase in the number of visitors (Apollo, 2017; Geneletti & Dawa, 2009; Hovelsrud et al, 2021; Mutana & Mukwada, 2018; Nepal, 2000; Welling et al, 2015; Welling et al, 2019), (2) migrations related to climate change (Kohler & Maselli, 2009; Palomo, 2017; Warner et al, 2009) and (3) potential development of mining and its associated conflicts (Arellano‐Yanguas, 2011; Bebbington & Bury, 2009; Carreño & Diez Hurtado, 2018). Altogether, we might expect an increase in the number of people living and visiting such fragile areas, as exemplified by Vinicunca.…”
