Establishment of a continuous somatostatin-producing line of medullary thyroid carcinoma cells from BALB/c mice

Abstract: A continuous line of somatostatin-producing medullary thyroid carcinoma cells was established from a transplantable tumour in BALB/c mice. Virtually all of the somatostatin immunoreactivity co-chromatographed with somatostatin 14. The tumour cells replicated in spinner cultures with a doubling time of approximately 4 days, and the concentration of somatostatin released into the culture medium increased in proportion to the number of cells. Two- to threefold increases in amounts of stored and released somatosta… Show more

“…These observations suggest that production of somatostatin is not a facultative property of many C-cells but that during neonatal life C-cells differentiate into two types, one producing calcitonin but not somatostatin and the other producing both hormones. The description of the production of an autonomous somatostatin-producing cell line from a mouse medullary carcinoma supports this (18).…”

“…Cells from aggressive fibromatosis tumors or hypertrophic wounds treated with Nefopam had a significantly lower proliferation rate, while normal fibroblasts from the same patients did not demonstrate an appreciable change in proliferation rate, as measured using the BrdU incorporation assay [22] (Fig. 2A).…”

“…This change may require morphometry for definitive diagnosis (Bosland andBär, 1984 andTischler et al, 1985) and is not accompanied by cytological atypia. Diffuse hyperplasia may expand the medullary region with compression of the surrounding cortical tissue.…”

“…Several studies suggest that the development of adrenal medullary hyperplasia and pheochromocytomas in rats is accompanied by increasing NE/E ratios (Bär, 1988;Bosland and Bär, 1984;Eränkö , 1955;Ribelin et al, 1984 andTischler et al, 1985). Rat pheochromocytomas appear, in most instances, to have a distinctive phenotype characterized by predominant or exclusive production of NE and by secretory granules smaller and sparser than those in typical E and NE cells (Figure 8) (Tischler et al,Figure 7 Rat adrenal gland with 'malignant' pheochromocytoma.…”
