“…At undergraduate level, an interest in research could be encouraged by providing more opportunities for nursing students to experience research through placements with research nurses and through conducting primary research for their dissertation (Loke et al., ). Support for new graduates in career planning (Byrne et al., ) and internships or mentoring schemes for those new to clinical research (Cleary et al., ; Jones‐Berry ) are also important in attracting and retaining new nurses. To recruit experienced nurses, other nurses or health professionals could act as “research advocates,” identifying talented nurses and encouraging them to take up a research post, while recognizing and supporting their diverse motivations for doing so.…”

AimTo provide a better understanding of the factors affecting recruitment and retention of clinical research nurses.DesignQualitative exploratory design.MethodsAn on‐line questionnaire comprising open‐ended and fixed‐choice questions was completed by 121 clinical research nurses. Seven focus groups were held with a subgroup of 26 participants. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis.ResultsParticipants were attracted to a research nurse post by an interest in research itself, a desire for a change or to achieve personal objectives. The majority expected to continue in a research post for the next 5 years, while others expected to move on to research management, a clinical post or retirement; few had ambitions to become an independent researcher. Factors identified in focus groups as leading to intentions to leave research included desire for further change, concern about loss of clinical skills, rebalancing family/work responsibilities, short‐term contracts, unsupportive employers and limited career progression.

Spirituality in Nursing: An Overview of Research Methods

Spirituality has been widely considered important for patients' health and for healthcare practice and is related to connectedness, meaning in life, and transcendence. Research concerning spirituality is growing rapidly, and the implementation of spiritual care should be based on evidence. This literature review aims to describe the methods that have been used in nursing research focusing on spirituality. The electronic search on databases through EBSCOhost identified 2091 citations, and a total of 231 studies were included. The methods used in research on spirituality in nursing are mostly quantitative (52.4%), but some are qualitative (42.8%) and mixed (4.8%). Regarding the quantitative research, most studies are observational (90.9%), and these are mainly descriptive (82.7%) and correlational (17.3%). Most studies used a cross-sectional design (98.7%), and few used longitudinal design (1.3%). The qualitative research is descriptive (39.4%), phenomenological (26.3%), and grounded theory (14.1%). Research on spirituality in nursing is based on both main paradigms (quantitative and qualitative), but also on mixed methods. Studies have mainly been conducted using cross-sectional designs when compared to longitudinal designs. The latter seem to constitute a gap in nursing knowledge and evidence regarding the changes of spirituality over time, which is particularly important for nurses' delivery of spiritual care.

Results:The research groups have increased from 251 in 2006 to 617 in 2016, with important increase of the number of participants, among students and researchers. There was a decrease of the number of groups without students. However, 22% remain without undergraduate students' participation. Conclusions:It has been observed an important increase regarding the interest on research activities, when comparing both scenarios. The nursing research groups reflect structural and political advances in generation of science, technology and innovation, however, the undergraduate students' and the foreign researchers' participation should still be encouraged.
