Essential oils in the initial phase of broodstock diets of Nile tilapia

Abstract: -This study evaluated the effect of feed supplementation (at doses of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mg/kg) with SALUTO ® , a microencapsulated blend of essential oils including carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, 1,8-cineol, and pepper oleoresin, in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) broodstock on reproductive and growth parameters during the initial phase of rearing. The growth parameters, somatic indexes and gonadal and hepatic parameters were analyzed. Quantitative parameters of growth, ovary fat and crude protein were… Show more

“…The gut secretions stimulating effect of EOs also allows the microbiota to modulate and improve digestion and absorption of nutrients. This stimulation may provide a greater array of amino acids for protein synthesis and thus increase body protein content (Freccia et al 2014). Thus, the effects of EOs on gut bacterial population also may be indirect, in contrast to the effects observed when using conventional antibiotics as growth promoters, where the mechanisms are mainly related to the activity directly on the bacteria (Butaye et al 2003;Lin 2011;Yang et al 2015).…”

“…Although previous studies have shown mixed effects of PEO supplementation on nutrient retention (see review by Teves & Ragaza, ), the positive effect of the supplement used in the present study was such that fish fed LFM+PEP showed similar energy and protein retention to fish fed the HFM diet. PEOs are known to stimulate gut secretions, which increases nutrient utilization and protein synthesis and, ultimately, fish protein content (Freccia et al, ). Although the increased whole‐body protein content observed here (Table ) did not improve growth performance in sea bass fed PEP‐supplemented diets, the metabolic indicators of nutrient utilization (N gain, and N metabolic and fecal losses) suggest that all diets had an adequate protein supply.…”

“…These compounds can have a significant influence in the early stages of fish development, stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes, accelerating the absorption of glucose and preventing the adherence of pathogens to the intestinal mucosa (Freccia et al . ; Hernández et al . ; Zeppenfeld et al .…”
