Essential Oil of Flowers from Eugenia klotzschiana (Myrtaceae): Chemical Composition and In Vitro Trypanocidal and Cytotoxic Activities

Abstract: Chagas disease, which is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, has been commonly treated by nifurtimox and benzonidazole, two drugs that cause several side effects. As a result, the use of natural products for treating neglected diseases has increased in recent years and plants have become a promising alternative to developing new medicines. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil from fresh flowers of Eugenia klotzchiana and to evaluate for the first time its trypanocidal… Show more

“…Previous studies have shown that β-caryophyllene and bicyclogermacrene are present in the essential oil obtained from species other than E. pyriformis. β-Caryophyllene is a major component of essential oil of E. klotzschiana [18], E. moraviana [19], E. argentea [5] and E. involucrata [20]; it is abundantly present in the essential oil of E. stipitata [21] and E. umbeliflora [19].…”

“…It is a fruit consumed by the regional population in the form of jams, sweets, jellies, and natural juices. In the past, its consumption was more frequent, however, currently, there is a shortage of its trees, as a result of the deforestation that has occurred in the cerrado regions for raising beef cattle or wood plantations, reducing access and consumption (Carneiro, Alves, Alves, Esperandim, & Miranda, 2017).…”
