Essential Oil Microcapsules Immobilized on Textiles and Certain Induced Effects

Abstract: In order to obtain textile materials with potential utility in the development of cosmetic textiles, this study examined the deposition by padding of rose and sage microcapsules on woven textile structures, with different fiber compositions (100% cotton and 50% cotton/50% polyester). Cationization of the textile materials was performed to enhance the degree of uptake the pf the microcapsules on the fabrics’ surface. A commercially acrylate-based binder was used to fix the microcapsules to the textile substrate… Show more

“…Essential oils stimulate depolarization in mitochondrial membranes and also change their fluidity [ 130 ], thus leading to necrosis and apoptosis [ 24 ]. The main compounds in rose essential oil are citronellol, linalool, geraniol, flavonoids, and citral, which have been reported to have anticancer activities together with monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes [ 131 , 132 , 133 , 134 ]. Terpenes in essential oils could change the nature of the cell membrane, thus causing cell death [ 24 ].…”

“…7 In particular, the microencapsulation technology in textiles requires further incorporation of the capsules onto the fabric, employing a binder to prevent the loss upon washing. 8 Cotton fabrics are susceptible to microbial colonization due to the hydrophilic composition of carbohydrates. Moreover, the pores tend to retain moisture and also serve as a source of oxygen, nutrients, and energy for the growth of microorganisms.…”

“…Microencapsulation technology can protect plant essential oils from the external environment, greatly improve its stability and storage and provide a strong support for the further development and utilization of plant essential oils. Microencapsulation refers to the use of natural or synthetic polymer materials to encapsulate the target material, which can be gas, liquid droplets or solid particles, into tiny containers with core-shell structures ranging from a few to several hundred to thousands of microns in diameter [10]. At present, there are more than 200 kinds of microcapsules.…”
