There is a gap in the literature for the preparation of agar-xanthan gum-carboxymethyl cellulose-based films by thermo compression methods. The present work aims to fill this gap by blending the polysaccharides in a plastograph and preparation of films under high pressure and temperature for a short duration of time. The pivotal aim of this work is also to know the effect of different mixing conditions on the physical, chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of the films. The films are assessed based on results from microscopic, infrared spectroscopic, permeability (WVTR), transmittance, mechanical, rheological and thermogravimetric analysis. The results revealed that the mixing volume and mixing duration had negative effects on the films’ transparency. WVTR was independent of the mixing conditions and ranged between 1078 and 1082 g/m2.d. The mixing RPM and mixing duration had a positive effect on the film tensile strength. The films from the blends mixed at higher RPM for a longer time gave elongation percentage up to 78%. Blending also altered the crystallinity and thermal behavior of the polysaccharides. The blend prepared at 80 RPM for 7 min and pressed at 140 °C showed better percent elongation and light barrier properties.

Mycotoxins present a great concern to food safety and security due to their adverse health and socio-economic impacts. The necessity to formulate novel strategies that can mitigate the economic and health effects associated with mycotoxin contamination of food and feed commodities without any impact on public health, quality and nutritional value of food and feed, economy and trade industry become imperative. Various strategies have been adopted to mitigate mycotoxin contamination but often fall short of the required efficacy. One of the promising approaches is the use of bioactive plant components/metabolites synergistically with mycotoxin-absorbing components in order to limit exposure to these toxins and associated negative health effects. In particular, is the fabrication of β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponges encapsulated with bioactive compounds of plant origin to inhibit toxigenic fungi and decontaminate mycotoxins in food and feed without leaving any health and environmental hazard to the consumers. The present paper reviews the use of botanicals extracts and their phytochemicals coupled with β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponge technology to inhibit toxigenic fungal invasion and detoxify mycotoxins.

Using polymer daily becomes increasingly extensive; the many characteristics of hydrogel lead to a wide range of uses, particularly in biomedical applications. Hydrogel films were made from a variety of materials in this investigation. Casting techniques and room temperature drying were used to make PVP- CMC- Gums films based on hydrogels, however, the effects of adding bentonite clay were needed. SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, swelling, solubility, contact angle, and a variety of other studies were used to illustrate and analyze a variety of physical, mechanical, thermal, and many characteristics. The major findings revealed new peaks, which indicate the creation of cross-linking bonds, which are the primary cause of capsulation and release characteristics, indicating that these films might be utilized in drug delivery and a variety of other applications. The PCXB film has the best color, surface hydrophobicity, solubility, and swelling properties, while the PCGB film has the greatest biodegradability and permeability results, and both films have strong thermal, mechanical, and releasing properties. As a result, adding bentonite clay to hydrogel films improves all of their characteristics, making them suitable for a variety of biomedical applications such as dentistry root filling, tissue engineering, contact lenses, and bandages.
