Esophageal squamous papillomatosis

Abstract: Esophageal squamous papillomatosis is rare and has been associated with gastroesophageal reflux and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. We report a case of extensive esophageal papillomatosis, no airway involvement and a slowly progressive clinical course with progressive strictures and ultimately fatal squamous cell carcinoma. In-situ hybridization performed on biopsy specimens was negative for high-risk human papilloma virus types. Due to the paucity of reported cases, little is conclusively known about th… Show more

Based on the available data on geographic regions with different HPV prevalence , the studies were categorized into the following regions of origin: China & Taiwan, Other Asia, Africa/Middle East, Europe, North America, and South America.…”

“…23 Although it is unknown whether solitary esophageal papillomas are premalignant lesions because of the highly variable clinical course, ESP carries a significant potential of malignant transformation, as squamous cell carcinomas were identified in almost half of the reported cases. 2,4–8,11,28 Thus, early diagnosis and treatment remain imperative.…”
