Esophageal cancer treatment costs by phase of care and treatment modality, 2000‐2013

Abstract: Background Detailed cost estimates are not widely available for esophageal cancer. Our study estimates phase‐specific costs for esophageal cancer by age, year, histology, stage, and treatment for older patients in the United States and compares these costs within stage and treatment modalities. Methods We identified 8061 esophageal cancer patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results‐Medicare database for years 1998‐2013. Total, cancer‐attributable, and pa… Show more

“…We based our cost estimation methods on previous studies. [20][21][22][23] We defined treatment modalities for patients with stages I-III CRC based on treatment(s) initiated two months prior to cancer diagnosis through six months after diagnosis. The two months prior to diagnosis were included to account for any treatment given to a symptomatic cancer patient who had not yet been diagnosed, as well as possible errors in dates recorded in the claims.…”

“…For example, Angela and her groups have made a large number of statistics on the cost of patients with esophageal cancer with different treatment methods for a long time. For example, the average cost of radiotherapy for stage III patients is $7530, and the average cost of chemoradiotherapy is $11460 [48], if we can predict how well a patient will respond to treatments, it will save individuals and Medicare a lot of money.…”

“…In spite of BE surveillance and advances in endoscopy, only about 23.7% of EAC are diagnosed at stage I, 20.7% at stage II, 20.4% stage III, and 34.2% at stage IV disease. 46 Since the majority of patients are diagnosed at later stages with disease spread beyond the esophagus, EET is therapeutic in only a small fraction of patients presenting with EAC.…”
