“…We easily excluded these infectious diseases by serological tests, IGRAs, Mantoux skin test and specific Ziehl-Neelsen staining at renal biopsy. Two cases of xanthogranulomatous tubulointerstitial nephritis and granulomatous forms of uveitis with endogenous endophthalmitis have been described in patients with Klebsiella pneumoniae or Escherichia coli urinary tract infection, but our patient's urine cultures were persistently negative [8,9]. Some drugs can be associated with GBAU but neither nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs nor nifedipine have been described as such in the literature, whereas 1 case of nifedipine-induced GTIN has been reported [8].…”

“…With respect to the differential diagnosis, the association of both manifestations limits the possible etiologies. Common causes of GBAU are infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, syphilis, HSV, VZV, and EBV infections, as well as bacillus Calmette-Guerin [6,7,8,9]. Those diseases are also associated with GTIN [4,5,6,7].…”

“…One theory holds that abundant glucose, in the presence of rapidly multiplying organisms, favors fermentation of glucose to carbon dioxide. 13 Alternatively, the presence of devitalized or poorly perfused tissue may allow rapid replication of a gas-producing organism. In our patient, rupture of the membranes had occurred 2 days prior to fetal death.…”

“…(56,57) E. coli emphysematous endophthalmitis is a very rare and severe variety of E. coli endophthalmitis. (58,59) The mechanism of emphysematous endophthalmitis has been postulated that a high concentration of glucose in the eye tissue may provide a substrate that bacteria can ferment to produce carbondioxide and hydrogen. …”
