Objective to describe the level of uncertainty in illness in family caregivers of palliative care patients and detect associations between the profile of the caregiver and the levels of uncertainty.Method descriptive correlational study conducted with 300 family caregivers of hospitalized patients. The sociodemographic characterization of caregiver and patient was used to assess the caregiver profile, as well as the Uncertainty in Illness scale for family caregivers. Spearman’s Rho correlation test was applied to detect associations.Results the average score of illness uncertainty was 91.7 points. The analysis showed significant correlations between the level of uncertainty and patient dependence (r=0.18, p=0.001), symptom assessment (r=0.312, p<0.001), length of service as a caregiver (r=0.131, p=0.023), perception of support from health professionals (r=-0.16, p=0.048), family (r=-0.145, p=0.012) and religious support (r=-0.131, p=0.050).Conclusions there were high levels of uncertainty in caregivers about their patient’s illness. These levels are associated with the health condition and symptoms of the patient who is cared for, the length of service as a caregiver and the perceived support from health professionals, family and religion.

Objective Illness uncertainty is a salient experience for caregivers of children with disorders/differences of sex development (DSD) presenting with ambiguous genitalia; however, no validated measure of illness uncertainty exists for this unique population. Thus, the current study aimed to preliminarily identify the factor structure of the Parental Perception of Uncertainty Scale (PPUS) in caregivers of children with DSD presenting with ambiguous genitalia and examine the convergent validity of the PPUS. Methods Participants included 115 caregivers (Mage = 32.12 years, SD = 6.54; 57% mothers) of children (<2-year-olds) diagnosed with DSD participating in a larger, longitudinal study. Caregivers completed the PPUS as well as self-report measures of anxious, depressive, and posttraumatic stress symptoms. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted. Results Exploratory factor analysis results indicated that a 23-item 1-factor solution was the most parsimonious and theoretically sound factor structure (α = 0.92). Convergent validity analyses demonstrated further support for the use of the 23-item 1-factor solution over the original PPUS factor structure. Conclusion These results demonstrate the preliminary clinical and research utility of the PPUS with caregivers of children with DSD presenting with ambiguous genitalia. The PPUS may benefit from further refinement through qualitative research and item adaptation to capture uncertainties unique to DSD presenting with ambiguous genitalia. In addition, future research should replicate the proposed factor structure using confirmatory factor analysis with a separate, larger sample of caregivers of children with DSD to confirm the factor structure.

Diseño y validación de un cuestionario sobre factores de riesgo en niños con parálisis cerebral

Objetivo. Diseñar y validar, en su apariencia, un cuestionario para recolectar información sobre factores de riesgo en niños con parálisis cerebral. Metodología. Estudio descriptivo, metodológico, que incluyó una fase de diseño y otra de validación facial de un cuestionario. Esta última se llevó a cabo a través de la participación de 43 madres y 10 profesionales del área de la salud. Resultados. De acuerdo con el modelo teórico de Rutter alrededor de los factores de riesgo, se diseñó un cuestionario que permite recolectar información sobre condiciones pre y perinatales, que puede ser utilizado como parte de la documentación de la historia clínica de los niños con parálisis cerebral. Se realizó la validación facial del instrumento, cuyos resultados sugirieron la aceptación de 17 ítems y la reformulación de 12, equivalentes al 41,4% de la totalidad de preguntas del Cuestionario FR-PC. Limitaciones. El tamaño de la muestra pudo ser superior. De igual forma, no se encontró suficiente literatura que permitiera contrastar los resultados del estudio con otros similares. Valor. El producto de esta investigación es el Cuestionario FR-PC, herramienta que facilita la organización y la integración de los datos de la historia clínica del niño con PC, para la toma de decisiones. Así mismo, su contenido puede ser considerado para el desarrollo de proyectos de investigación en salud. Conclusiones. El Cuestionario FR-PC es una herramienta clara y comprensible para recolectar información sobre factores de riesgo en niños con parálisis cerebral.
