Key words:Aeromonas hydrophila, Fingerlings, Oreochromis niloticus, Refeeding, Starvation Knowledge of how fish respond to starvation periods could provide a basis for improved nutrition, rearing, disease control and thereby help to optimize Oreochromis niloticus culture. In the current study, the effect of alternative starvation-refeeding regime was monitored on some growth, hematological and serum biochemical parameters in Nile tilapia fingerlings; followed by checking the role of these feeding schedules in combating the disease challenge. The study was performed in glass aquariums at the aquaculture research unit, Sakha, Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, Egypt using 375 Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings weighing 29±0.5 gram. Fingerlings were subjected to different starvation periods (7, 10, 14, 21 days), followed by 30 days of refeeding on a commercial fish ration (25% protein). Fish growth parameters, hematological and serum biochemical parameters were recorded before starvation, before refeeding and after 30 days of refeeding. The experimental challenge was carried out to determine the effect of different starvation intervals followed by refeeding regimes on the immunity of O. niloticus fingerlings; against bacterial infection with Aeromonas hydrophila through recording mortality rates and the histopathological finding.The collected results revealed that fingerlings can recover all the hematological and serum biochemical parameter values of all food deprived groups close to the normal level of full-fed control fish; concluding that O. niloticus can easily be cultured on suitable economic short-time feeding regime with subsequent refeeding in alternate days without any significant differences in fish size and final production (reducing the food amount and cost required for production cycle). Besides, short-term starvation prior to a bacterial infection followed by subsequent refeeding could promote the defense mechanism of the fish to fight against Aeromonas hydrophila.

Betanoda virus is an emerging problem in several marine fish species in various geographic areas all over the world. In recent years, mullets stock of the Caspian Sea decreased dramatically and a betanoda virus likeagent was introduced as the cause of mullet's mortality. The main objective of the present study is to compare hemato-biochemical parameters in healthy and infected sharpnose mullets (Liza saliens) to betanoda virus likeagent. The adult sharpnose mullets (34 clinically affected fish ? 34 apparently healthy fish) were captured from the southeast the Caspian Sea from 2012 to 2013. All of the captured fish were 4 or 5 years old. The main clinical sings of infected fish were lethargy, severe abdominal distention, abnormal swimming and hyperinflation of swim bladder. The results showed that the weight and total length of infected fish were significantly lower than the healthy fish. The results of histopatological evaluation and indirect florescent antibody test were confirmed the presence of a betanoda virus-like agent in infected fish. The diseased fish were severely anemic (hypochromic macrocytic anemia) and had a serious haemopoietic disorders. The anemia associated with a sever leukopenia, a significant rise of neutrophils and immature neutrophils and a significant decries of lymphocytes percentage. Total protein, albumin and total immunoglobulin levels were significantly reduced in the serum of infected fish, while the activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase significantly increased when compared to the healthy fish. These results suggested that the feeding of the infected fish to betanoda virus like-agent were disturbed and it could be cause haemato-biochemical disorder and mortality of the fish in Iranian water of the Caspian Sea.

This study describes the hematological and biometric characteristics of male and female Gymnotus species from the Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Fifty adult specimens of Gymnotus inaequilabiatus were weighed, measured, and then euthanized. Blood was collected by puncturing the celiac mesenteric vein to determine the hematocrit, hemoglobin content, number of erythrocytes, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, glucose level, absolute value of leukocytes, and relative value of leukocytes and thrombocytes. Body weight and relative condition factor did not differ (P > 0.05) between the sexes, as well as erythrogram and the blood glucose values. Hematocrit ranged from 18.0% to 54.0%; hemoglobin from 1.1 to 14.7 g dL -1 ; number of erythrocytes from 0.2 × 10 6 to 3.8 ×10 6 µL -1 ;MCV from 24.2 to 321.7 fL; and MCHC from 4.2 to 44.5 g dL -1 . In the differential count were identified thrombocytes, lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, basophils, immature leukocytes, and PAS-positive granular leukocyte (PAS-GL). Females had a higher percentage of immature leukocytes (P < 0.05) than males. Glucose levels, erythrogram, leukogram, and the morphology of defense cells are comparable to other fish species of the Pantanal. Thrombocytes were the most frequent defense cells, followed by lymphocytes and neutrophils.
