Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate: The Normal Range in the Elderly

Abstract: A study was made of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in 258 normal nonhospitalized elderly subjects (189 women and 69 men). Their ages ranged from 70 to 89 years. Those who had been followed for at least one year showed a mean ESR of 13 mm/hr, with a range of 3-65 mm. A subgroup of 55 (47 women and 6 men) who had been followed for periods of 3 to 11 years showed a mean ESR of 14 mm/hr, with a range of 3-69 mm. The findings indicate that an ESR above the accepted normal range may be consistent with cont… Show more

“…High values were noted of S-cholesterol in women and of P-creatinine and ESR in both sexes. This confirms the results of some earlier studies [13,15,16], even if the P-creatinine rise is disputed and the S-cholesterol value is thought to decrease after around 60 years of age [2], S-immunoglobulins G and A also showed high median values in the elderly.…”

“…Obviously, there is an urgent need for the establishment of such intervals. Many studies [2,4,7,8,10,13,15,16] have show n that, without doubt, there exist age variations. Despite this, much decision-mak ing in hospitals is based on standard refer ence intervals calculated from young, healthy persons.…”

“…It is also known that elderly patients have more comorbidities—diagnosed or occult—that can elevate ESR 15. Furthermore, ESR is influenced by a number of physiological changes, including anaemia, decreased albumin levels, elevated levels of fibrinogen and to a lesser extent α 2 -, β- and χ-globulins, decreased renal function and medication—all of them factors that can be associated with aging 1618. Anaemia occurs in approximately 30% of patients with RA, which is three times the rate in the general population 19.…”

“…Im Hinblick auf Laborparameter ist die Erhöhung der Blutkörperchensenkungsgeschwindigkeit bei alten Menschen wenig hinweisend, weil sie schon physiologisch erhöht ist und keineswegs Ausdruck einer Infektion sein muss (20).…”
