Eruptive keratoacanthoma with an internal malignant neoplasm

Abstract: A 65-year-old woman had hundreds of tumors on the sun-exposed portions of her body and similar lesions in her mouth. All biopsy specimens showed changes consistent with the diagnosis of keratoacanthoma. Further examination of this patient disclosed an asymptomatic ovarian carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case of the rare disorder of eruptive keratoacanthoma to occur in a patient with an internal malignant neoplasm.

“…Lastly, GEKA has been reported in association with internal malignancy such as ovarian 8 and fallopian tube carcinoma. 11 It has also been demonstrated in association with latent syphilis, haemolytic anaemia and systemic lupus erythematosus. However, these associations seem to be coincidental without definite causal relationship with the development of the disease.…”

“…Several associated conditions have been reported consisting of autoimmune diseases (Sj€ ogren's syndrome, 6 systemic lupus erythematosus) 7 and internal malignancies (asymptomatic ovarian carcinoma, 8 metastasizing carcinoma of the fallopian tube, stem cell leukemia, metastatic colon cancer). 9 So far, the present case is the first report in the published work about GEKA with vitiligo, which reveals that immunity may play an important role in GEKA.…”

“…Other reports link internal ma lignancy with the appearance of keratoacanthomas. in the absence of sebaceous neoplasms [29][30][31][32][33]. One patient with intestinal polyps and a markedly positive family history of colon cancer developed sebaceous adenomas and a keratoacanthoma following iatrogenic immunosuppres- sion.…”

“…17 (43%) had at least one keratoacanthoma (table I). Several cases of keratoacanthoma in associ ation with visceral malignancy, but without the presence of sebaceous adenoma, have also been reported [29][30][31][32][33]. The association of both keratoacanthomas and sebaceous neoplasms in this syndrome may be explained by their common derivation from pilosebaceous follicles [36].…”
