ERS‐1/2 orbit improvement using TOPEX/POSEIDON: The 2 cm challenge

Abstract: Abstract. The ERS orbit error reduction method using TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) data as a reference [Le Traon et al., 1995a] was applied to ERS-1 cycles from phases C, E, F, and G and to the first 16 cycles of the ERS-2 mission (phase A). T/P M-GDR (geophysical data record) (version C) and ERS-1/2 ocean product (OPR) data were used. ERS-1/2 orbits are the D-PAF (processing and archiving facility) orbits and, when necessary, ERS-1/2 altimetric corrections were updated to make the T/P and ERS-1/2 corrections homogeneo… Show more

“…These data are geophysically corrected for tides, inverse barometer, tropospheric, and ionospheric signals (Le Traon and Ogor, 1998;Dorandeu and Le Traon, 1999). The oceanographic signal is less accurate near the coast because of pollution by land and in shallow waters due to inaccuracies of the global tidal model that is used to dealias the along-track altimeter observations.…”

“…Both weekly and daily gridded data estimated from the along-track SLA fields, corrected for inverse barometer effect, tides, and tropospheric effects (Le Traon and Ogor 1998), are based on the merged Topex/Poseidon and Jason (10 day repeat), GFO (Geosat Follow-On; 17 day repeat), ERS-1, ERS-2, and ENVISAT (35 day repeat) altimeter data (Ducet, LeTraon, and Reverdin 2000). Whereas the latitudinal coverage of ERS and ENVISAT is ±81.5°, it is ±72°for GFO.…”

“…In addition to weak mean flow, the variability, both on a global basis and in this particular area, is also too low in this model. Averaged over the California Current region, the and Ogor, 1998; . Worse still, the near surface eddy kinetic energy is low by almost an order of magnitude compared to estimates based Ž on drifter, altimeter and ADCP data Kelly et al, .…”
