Errors in abdominal ultrasonography in dogs and cats

Abstract: This study demonstrates that whilst errors of diagnosis do occur during ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen, understanding the causes of these errors will contribute to the development of this imaging modality.

“…The sonographic evaluation of shoulder joint revealed no lesions in six cases in G1 (6/58, 10%). To our knowledge, the sonographic exam could be negative due to the incapability of complete evaluation of shoulder joint or due to cognitive, inevitable or multifactorial errors [23]. Nevertheless, we emphasize that a correct valuation is strictly dependent on operators experience and equipment.…”

“…Abdominal ultrasonography has been commonly used as a conventional imaging modality for evaluation of abdominal organs in veterinary medicine. However, there are difficulties in imaging the entire spleen of patients with splenomegaly and limitations to the correct evaluation of origin [ 3 ]. The sensitivity of ultrasonography in differentiating a malignant- from a nonmalignant mass is poor, because both types of masses tend to vary in echogenicity and appearance [ 3 ].…”

The sensitivity of ultrasonography in differentiating a malignant- from a nonmalignant mass is poor, because both types of masses tend to vary in echogenicity and appearance [ 3 ]. Contrast harmonic ultrasonography is not useful in distinguishing splenic hemangiosarcoma from nonmalignant mass, either [ 5 ].…”

“…In this report, ultrasonography was important in identifying and characterizing (location, shape, and ultrasonographic features) the intestinal lesion and predetermining the malignancy of the lesion; thus aiding diagnosis and subsequent clinical and therapeutic management, as suggested by Garcia and Froes (2012). The ultrasonographic findings observed in this report were compatible with neoplastic abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract (loss of the normal intestinal stratification) (Silva et al 2015).…”
