Error-resilient video transcoding for robust internetwork communications using GPRS

Abstract: Abstract-A novel fully comprehensive mobile video communications system is proposed in this paper. This system exploits the useful rate management features of the video transcoders and combines them with error resilience for transmissions of coded video streams over general packet radio service (GPRS) mobileaccess networks. The error-resilient video transcoding operation takes place at a centralized point, referred to as a video proxy, which provides the necessary output transmission rates with the required am… Show more

“…The method is based on analytical models that characterize how corruption propagates in a video that is compressed using motion-compensated encoding and subjected to bit errors. Dogan [6] used adaptive intra refresh (AIR) and feedback control signaling (FCS) methods to improve the error resilience of compressed video in the transcoding operation. The AIR method prevents the error propagation within a video stream by using a pre-determined number of intra MBs.…”

“…However, the general concept of transcoding video to boost error resiliency is reported in the literature. For instance, [4,5] proposed the use of Adaptive Intra Refresh (AIR) and feedback control signalling for video transmission over GPRS. A similar approach appeared in [6] which estimates the effect of error propagation and selectively applies Adaptive Intra Refresh.…”

“…The work in [9] proposes an error-resilience transcoder for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) mobile-access networks with the transcoding process performed at a video proxy that can be located at the edge of two or more networks. Two error-resilience tools: the Adaptive Intra Refresh (AIR) and Feedback Control Signaling (FCS) are used adaptively to reduce error effects, while preserving the transmission rate adaptation feature of the video transcoders.…”
