Error resiliency of distributed video coding in wireless video communication

Abstract: Distributed Video Coding (DVC) is a new paradigm in video coding, based on the Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems. DVC offers a number of potential advantages: flexible partitioning of the complexity between the encoder and decoder, robustness to channel errors due to intrinsic joint source-channel coding, codec independent scalability, and multi-view coding without communications between the cameras. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of DVC in an error-prone wireless communication environment. We al… Show more

“…In our solution, we chose to focus on latency, since high-throughput traffic like multimedia traffic is relatively loss tolerant but not delay tolerant. Also, the reliability in small networks or for low values of p rt remains fully acceptable: below a 10% packet loss, coding techniques can compensate [20]. If one may want to use AMPH under unfavorable conditions, it is entirely possible to implement a safe mode that would be triggered when excessive degradation of reliability occurs, where the base station sends acknowledgments when the sender transmits during the time slot of another node.…”

“…The side information frames are intended to be processed at the decoder, which exploit the temporal correlation among the frames. As motion information is only considered at the decoder side, DVC demands less computational power and energy at the encoder side than predictive video coding, also providing more error-resilience [ 63 ].…”
