Error Probability due to Clipping in Subcarrier Multiplexed Fiber-Optic Transmission Systems

Abstract: Intensity-modulated fiberoptic subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) transmission systems are distorted by impulsive noise from the clipping effect in optical transmitters due to the fact that the emitted optical power has to be positive and cannot become negative. The properties of the impulsive noise, such as the slowly decreasing probability density function are pointed out. For the transmission of digital QAM signals in SCM systems, the symbol error probability due to the impulsive noise is calculated analytically.… Show more
