Erk1/2 Activation in Stromal Fibroblasts From Sporadic Basal Cell Carcinomas

Abstract: The authors propose that there is a specific cell-type regulation of Erk activity in BCC, and this feature may be relevant during BCC formation. Stroma region from BCCs showed Erk activation and reduced proliferation. Conversely, Erk activation is barely detectable in proliferative BCCs.

“…SFN acts as a soluble cytoskeleton cofactor and binds to LAD1, and their overexpression is associated with increased MEK–ERK pathway activity. These data could explain why in our work, the expressions of LAD1 and SFN were low in BCC samples but high in SCC samples, as the ERK pathway has been reported activated in SCC ( 38 ), but not in BCC ( 39 ). Moreover, it is described that SCC has epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which confers aggressive capacities to the tumor.…”

“…Its incidence is rising by almost 10 % each year [2]. Almost 70 % of sporadic BCCs hold alterations in the Hedgehog signaling pathway [3, 4]. Basal cell carcinoma was considered a tumor of elderly onset, occurring mainly in sun‐exposed areas in males [5].…”
