Ergonomic Risk Assessment of Distal Upper Extremities by Job Strain Index in Carpet Weavers

Abstract: Background: Distal upper extremities musculoskeletal disorders (DUEMSDs) is considered as the main cause of working lost time, increased labor costs, and human injuries. This study was conducted to assess the risk factors of DUEMSDs in carpet weavers.

“…[ 3 6 15 20 ] Unlike Tunisia, the knotted carpet is the most widespread technique in several countries. According to Singh et al ,[ 6 ] knotted carpet weaving in India is based on four subtasks: “knotting,” “knot-cutting,” “beating of the knots,” and finally “the use of weaving comb.” In Iran, Mohammadpour et al ,[ 21 ] observed that the weaving task represented 78% of the time required by a handmade knotted carpet. They identified five subtasks: “pick up hook,” “see the map,” “select aigrette,” “knot,” and “cut the knot.” The highest MSD risk level was associated with “knot” and “cut the knot” sub-tasks.…”

“…Currently, controlling and reducing MSDs in the workforce is one of the most important global concerns for experts in ergonomics. The importance of controlling and reducing these disorders is so high that many countries consider the prevention of work-related MSDs among the workforce as one of the national priorities [ 8 – 10 ]. According to surveys by the WHO, as well as the documentations provided by this organization in 2013, work-related MSDs are at second place of occupational diseases following occupational respiratory diseases [ 11 ].…”

“…Mohammadpour et al 8 , among other authors, signal that exposure to occupational risk factors affect mostly the meck, back, and the upper extremities. Nevertheless, through a study conducted in the year 2017 in three Spanishspeaking countries, Campos et al 7 warns that no study has evaluated the simultaneous effect of various anatomical sites in the upper extremities-an expression defined for this text as coexistence, meaning the existence of two or more concomitant MSDs or two or more MSDs simultaneously occurring in the same extremity caused, in this case, by the performance of workplace activities.…”

“…As a result, without taking into account the coexistence or concomitance of various MSDs, the direction of treatment increases the consequences for the worker while causing a delay in the worker's rehabilitation, lowers the quality of life, and generates less productivity at work 8 . This situation impoverishes workers, and it can damage entire communities to lose its most productive company workers.…”
