Erectile responses among heterosexual child molesters, father-daughter incest offenders, and matched non-offenders: Five distinct age preference profiles.

Abstract: Erectile responses to pictures of nude females ranging in age from 3-24 years were studied in a group of 21 incest offenders, 40 non-familial child molesters, and a group of 22 non-offender subjects approximately matched on socioeconomic status, intelligence, and age. Profiles of erectile responses, plotting percent of full erection over age of target stimulus, were drawn for each individual subject. These profiles were sorted reliably by judges, and later by computer, into five distinct profile shapes reflect… Show more

“…Phallometric studies commonly report that CSOs also demonstrate arousal to adult stimuli (Barbaree & Marshall, 1989;Freund, Watson, & Dickey, 1991;Harris, Rice, Quinsey, Chapin, & Earls, 1992;Lykins et al, 2010). Likewise, in this study the offenders showed a visual sexual assessment-related process to the mature adult (20-and 40-year-old figures), similar to that shown by the controls.…”

“…The non-offenders were expected to only demonstrate this pattern when viewing figures of mature adults. In line with phallometric studies, we did not expect to find any difference in the gaze behaviour between CSO and non-offenders when viewing adult stimuli (e.g., Barbaree & Marshall, 1989).…”

“…William L. Marshall was the most-cited scholar in 1991-1995. His most-cited works then were "The Long-Term Evaluation of a Behavioral Treatment Program for Child Molesters" (Marshall and Barbaree 1988) and "Erectile Responses among Heterosexual Child Molesters, FatherDaughter Incest Offenders and Matched Nonoffenders" (Barbaree and Marshall 1989). However, his large number of citations was mainly a function of his large number of different works cited, which may be related to the fact that in 1991-1995 CJB published a number of articles focusing on sex offenders.…”

“…Some incest offenders respond most to adult females, which has led some authors (e.g., Quinsey, 1977) to speculate about nonsexual motives in incest. Barbaree and Marshall (1989) discovered five separate sexual preference profiles among child molesters. Two profiles were indicative of pedophilic arousal, one suggested a normal adult heterosexual orientation, one revealed a preference for adolescents, and the last involved indiscriminate arousal.…”
