Equivalence of Laptop and Tablet Administrations of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory–2 Restructured Form

Abstract: The present study investigated the comparability of laptop computer- and tablet-based administration modes for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF). Employing a counterbalanced within-subjects design, the MMPI-2-RF was administered via both modes to a sample of college undergraduates ( N = 133). Administration modes were compared in terms of mean scale scores, internal consistency, test-retest consistency, external validity, and administration time. Mean scores were g… Show more

“…Past research provides considerable evidence that the MMPI instruments are robust against alterations in the administration or presentation format of the test. For example, MMPI instrument results appear approximately equivalent regardless of whether the test is administered by test booklet, computer, or tablet (Finger & Ones, 1999; Forbey & Ben-Porath, 2007; Menton et al, 2019; Roper et al, 1995) or whether the items are administered in their standard order (Forbey & Ben-Porath, 2007; Hall et al, 2021; Roper et al, 1995; Tellegen & Ben-Porath, 2008/2011). Although there is no a priori reason to suspect that meaningful differences would arise between the results of in-person and remote police candidate assessments using the MMPI-2-RF, demonstrating this empirically would be beneficial given the high-stakes nature of public safety evaluations.…”

“… 1 As a point of comparison, in a study comparing laptop-based and tablet-based electronic administrations of the MMPI-2-RF, Menton et al (2019) obtained a mean column–vector correlation of r cv = .97, indicating nearly identical patterns of extratest correlation between administration modalities. …”

“…Many studies have reported on the psychometric equivalence of administering tests via paper-and-pencil and computer formats using an in-person administration (e.g., Daniel & Wahlstrom, 2019;Daniel et al, 2014;Finger & Ones, 1999;Forbey & Ben-Porath, 2007;Menton et al, 2019;Pinsoneault, 1996;Roper et al, 1995). Fewer studies have focused on the comparison between in-person vs remote administration formats of psychological tests, particularly with respect to performance tasks (e.g., Brearly et al, 2017;Chuah et al, 2006;Marra et al, 2020;Wright, 2018).…”
