The current study utilized an experimental design to investigate the utility of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)-3 Validity Scales for detecting overreporting and underreporting and the impact of these response sets on substantive scale scores. College students completed a battery of criterion measures before assignment to a Standard Instructions (SIs) Group (n = 288), an Overreporting Group (n = 250), or an Underreporting Group (n = 215). t tests demonstrated that scores on MMPI-3 overreporting indicators and most substantive scales were higher among the Overreporting Group relative to the SI group with very large effect sizes, and scores on MMPI-3 underreporting indicators were higher and most substantive scales scores were lower among the Underreporting Group relative to the SI group, with moderate to large effects. Classification accuracy estimates documented the effectiveness of MMPI-3 Validity Scales in detecting overreporting and underreporting. Bivariate correlations between MMPI-3 substantive scale scores and criterion measures (which were completed under SIs for all three groups) were substantially attenuated for both simulation groups relative to the SI Group. Bivariate correlations were also attenuated for groups identified as overreporting or underreporting using MMPI-3 Validity Scale scores relative to individuals with valid MMPI-3 protocols, highlighting the need for and importance of appraising threats to protocol validity when assessing personality and psychopathology by self-report. Public Significance StatementThis study used an experimental simulation design and demonstrated that MMPI-3 Validity Scales can detect overreporting and underreporting with good classification accuracy, and that the validity of substantive scales is substantially attenuated when individuals engage in these problematic response styles, highlighting the importance of appraising threats to protocol validity when assessing personality and psychopathology.

We examined the ability of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) scales to predict reflexive reactions to rejection elicited via a Cyberball task. In an effort to expand the criterion-related and incremental validity knowledge of the MMPI-3, we specifically focused on scale associations with the following adverse reflexive reactions: feelings of rejection, low positive and high negative affect, and high perceived threats to social needs. We hypothesized 10 substantive scales that assess negative emotionality, self-esteem, paranoia, and interpersonal difficulties to be positively associated with these adverse reactions, while we expected four scales indicative of interpersonal antagonism to be inversely related. The sample included 180 undergraduate students (80.6% female, 17.2% male; 59.5% White, 40.5% people of color), and analyses were conducted using the full sample and race-based subsamples. Results partially supported hypotheses, most notably in the case of indicators of mood/negative emotionality, Self-Doubt, and Self-Importance. Results were largely consistent across race-based subsamples with some notable exceptions. Our findings provide support for the validity of the MMPI-3 scales and their ability to assess reactions to an interpersonal stressor via a behavioral paradigm. Limitations (e.g., reliance on college student sample) and future directions (e.g., need for replication with larger samples) are discussed. Public Significance StatementIn a sample of college students [59.5% White and 40.5% people of color (POC)], this study examined MMPI-3 scales' associations with self-report of threatened fundamental needs, overall positive and negative affect, and feelings of rejection after an ostracism experience. The majority of examined scales demonstrated relationships to ostracism reactions in expected directions, providing novel construct validity evidence for select MMPI-3 scales.

The MMPI‐2‐RF‐EX was made available for data collection while the final MMPI‐3 was under development, and MMPI‐3 scales can be scored from the MMPI‐2‐RF‐EX, with no differences in scores or validity compared to administrations of the final MMPI‐3 version (Hall et al, 2021). Objective The current study examined associations between Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory‐3 (MMPI‐3) scales and self‐reported DSM‐5 Section II personality disorder (PD) symptoms. A priori hypotheses were generated for which MMPI‐3 scales would be most highly associated with each PD. Methods We used a large sample (n = 489) of university students, who completed the MMPI‐3 and two established self‐report measures of personality disorders. Results The results were generally consistent with theoretical expectations and previous research utilizing the MMPI‐2‐RF. Specifically, most hypothesized MMPI‐3 scales exhibited meaningful associations with relevant PD variables, although there were some notable exceptions. The regression models revealed significant predictors for each PD which were generally consistent with expectations and previous research. Conclusions Overall, the MMPI‐3 appears well situated to cover a range of DSM‐5 Section II PD‐related psychopathology, and three of the new MMPI‐3 scales appear to have added utility for assessing personality pathology.
