Equality on His Terms: Doing and Undoing Gender through Men’s Discussion Groups

Abstract: Efforts to promote gender equality often encourage changes to interpersonal interactions as a way of undermining gender hierarchy. Such programs are premised on the idea that the gender system can be "undone" when individuals behave in ways that challenge prevailing gender norms. However, scholars know little about whether and under what conditions real changes to the gender system can result from changed behaviors (Deutsch 2007; Risman 2009). We use the context of a gender sensitization program in the Democra… Show more

“…An in-depth qualitative study of the EMAP programme found that although men changed their everyday practices in terms of housework and beliefs of what constitutes a 'woman's work', men undermined the overall process of gender transformation by maintaining power and control over the objectives and processes of change, rather than demonstrating true commitment to gender equality. 17 To realise reductions in IPV, it may be important to address other factors, in addition to gender attitudes and norms, especially in conflict-affected settings. For instance, addressing economic stress may be an important component of efforts to reduce IPV.…”

“…Original manuscript uploaded prior to peer review: Evaluating complex interventions using qualitative longitudinal research: a case study of understanding pathways to violence prevention Recent studies illustrate two key factors that highlight the importance of detecting gradual and subtle change on pathways to IPV prevention. First, that prevention programs sometimes lead to attitudinal or behavior shifts without attaining transformational or system-level change; and second, that attitudinal change can happen without behavior change, and vice versa (Pierotti, Lake and Lewis, 2018;Gibbs et al, 2019;Jewkes, Stern and Ramsoomar, 2019;McLean, Heise and Stern, 2019). This may imply a growing emphasis on detecting incremental attitudinal and behavioral shifts and exploring the relationship between them.…”

“…In Canada, there are special authorised state bodies: the Ministry of Women's Affairs and the Department of Gender Equality under the Canadian International Development Agency. The USA in 1963 -1964 adopts the laws on equal pay and prohibition of discrimination (Pierotti et al, 2018). In 2017, gender inequality worsened in 82 countries out of the 142.…”
