Epstein–Barr virus and thyroid cancer: The role of viral expressed proteins

Abstract: Background: Thyroid cancer is a common endocrine malignancy whose incidence has increased in recent years. Several internal and external risk factors are involved in the development of this cancer, such as infectious agents. Evidence supporting the role of viral infection as an etiology for the invasiveness of thyroid cancer is increasing. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and the association between viral gene products and thyroid tumor development. Methods: Fi… Show more

“…EBV‐encoded LMP1 is a functional homolog of the TNF‐receptor family and, through activating the NF‐κB, contributes to the oncogenic potential of EBV . Through microRNA microarray analysis, Cameron et al showed that EBV‐LMP1 dysregulates the different cellular miRNAs expression, including miR‐146a.…”

“…73 EBV-encoded LMP1 is a functional homolog of the TNF-receptor family and, through activating the NF-κB, contributes to the oncogenic potential of EBV. 132,133 Through microRNA microarray analysis, Cameron et al 61 showed that EBV-LMP1 dysregulates the different cellular miRNAs expression, including miR-146a. Examination of the miR-146a level in the EBV-latency type I and III BL line showed that miR-146a expression was significantly changed in latency type III cells (that express LMP1 protein), however, it was not significantly altered in latency type I cell lines.…”

“…After the elimination of the triggering stimulus and the resolution of the injury, inflammation should be disabled in a programmed manner. However, if the stimulus is persistent, the acute inflammation becomes chronic in nature, and evidence suggests that chronic inflammation is strongly associated with cancer . About 20% of human cancers are associated with chronic inflammation caused by infectious agents, autoimmune diseases and long‐term exposure to irritants and other noxious agents.…”

Common causes of persistent inflammation that lead to cancer development, include infection with hepatitis C or B viruses that lead to hepatocellular carcinoma, inflammatory bowel disease that leads to colorectal cancer and infection with Helicobacter pylori that leads to gastric cancer.…”
