Epoxidized linolenic acid salts as multifunctional additives for the thermal stability of plasticized PVC

Abstract: Calcium and zinc salts of epoxidized linolenic acid were synthesized and used as multifunctional additives, to minimize or prevent the reaction of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) with liberated hydrochloric acid (HCl) during the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in particular. These metal epoxy salts were incorporated as thermal stabilizers for both diisodecyl phthalate and ESO–plasticized PVC blends that underwent thermal degradation studies at 170°C. The overall performance of these metal epoxy … Show more

“…They can readily be converted into their corresponding epoxidized oils by epoxidation, leading to materials with potential use as biobased plasticizers and matrices for green composites. Several epoxidized vegetable oils such as epoxidized linseed oil, epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO), epoxidized castor oil, epoxy octyl stearate and epoxidized cottonseed oil have been reported as environmentally friendly plasticizers for a wide variety of polymers . The use of monomeric and polymeric plasticizers has also been reported in the last decade.…”

“…11 Plasticizers can be either a primary or a secondary plasticizer. 23 Nihul et al investigated the effect of epoxidized rice bran oil (ERBO) as coplasticizer for PVC. Secondary plasticizers have limited compatibility with the PVC polymer chains and thus do not help PVC become flexible or soft as required.…”

“…Note that the metal soap used herein was of a type that is particularly effective at stabilizing ESO plasticized PVC compositions . Furthermore, other newer thermal stabilizers have also been shown to be useful in such systems …”
