“…Tobacco use results in local exposure of the oral mucosa to nicotine and the heavy metals present in it. Due to the release of nicotine from the mucous membranes and absorption of swallowed nicotine, its continuous absorption takes place even after the tobacco is discarded from the mouth; therefore, it can diffuse from the site of generation and inflict damage at remote locations (29,30). With continuous local irritation by tobacco and the genotoxic effects of nicotine accumulation in saliva, injuries related to chronic inflammation and OS occurs.…”

“…Therefore, the high density of collagen and elastic fibers found in the present study may be due in part to androgen depletion as indicated by the low circulating testosterone levels observed in the nicotine group. Similarly, a recent study investigating the effects of passive smoking also demonstrated a significant accumulation of type I collagen fibers (Ferragut et al,2010). Moreover, the morphological characteristics and distribution of collagen I observed in the present study differed from the findings obtained for androgen deprivation in rats (Vilamaior et al,2000).…”

“…In this sense, some studies relate that patients with hernias in the abdomen wall also have diabetes, associated or not with the use of tobacco or alcohol. However, these are studies that only focus these elements as being risk factors for the occurrence of hernias, but do not explain which changes happen in the tissues 12 , 16 .…”
