Epithelial Ovarian Carcinoma Types and the Coexistence of Ovarian Tumor Conditions

Abstract: Objective. Ovarian carcinomas are presumed to arise within ovarian inclusion cysts or from a coexisting epithelial lesion in the ovary. Insight may be gained by relating different subtypes of ovarian cancer with the presence of coexisting tumor-like conditions. Methods. The Dutch nation-wide pathology database PALGA (Pathologisch Anatomisch Landelijk Geautomatiseerd Archief) identified the various histopathological subtypes of ovarian cancer in 824 patients diagnosed in 1996–2003, and recorded the presence of … Show more

“…Owing to the anatomic location of the ovary that make it inaccessible for screening and the nonspecific symptoms of its tumors, the majority of the patients present with advanced disease, making prognosis poor. 14 In this study, most of the patients(61%) had stage lll disease and no patient in stage IV diseases after sugicopathological evaluation. Epithelial ovarian cancer (74%) was the most common histological type.…”

“…Indonesian Journal of Clinical Pathology and Medical Laboratory, 2019 March, 25 (2) : 184 -190 The biology of ovarian carcinoma, furthermore, is different from hematogenous tumors since ovarian cancer cells mainly spread in the peritoneal cavity and are only superficially invasive. But, when tumors that proliferate rapidly suppress the visceral organs and only chemosensitivity is temporary, ovarian carcinoma becomes a deadly disease with a cure rate of only 30%.…”

“…[ 1 ] Due to the anatomic location of the ovaries making it inaccessible for testing, lack of a proper screening method and the non-specific symptoms of its tumors, the majority of the patients present in advanced stage; leading to increased morbidity and mortality. [ 2 ] Preoperative histologic confirmation of malignant ovarian tumors is mandatory before chemotherapy. Biopsy is advised in patients with either primarily inoperable pelvic tumor, advanced tumor with compromised performance status or recurrent tumors.…”
