Epithelial Cell Proliferation, Apoptosis, and Apoptosis Inhibition in Inverted Papillomas

Abstract: Inverted papillomas (IPs) are rare benign tumors of nasal epithelium with high recurrence rates and malignant transformation potential. Their etiology is still uncertain, and the mechanism of their growth has not yet been fully described. The purpose of this study was to detect, quantify, and compare cell proliferation, apoptosis, and apoptosis inhibition in hyperplastic epithelium from IPs and in inflammatory nasal polyps (NPs). IP samples were obtained after surgical removal of tumor in 13 patients, and NPs … Show more

“…Findings regarding the incidence percentage of HPV with a variable degree of dysplasia [Zhou et al, 2001] also appear to contradict the results of the present study. A higher degree of proliferation and apoptosis has been demonstrated in inverted papilloma compared to nasal polyps [Guichard et al, 1998]. Cellular proliferation was also significantly higher than apoptosis in the inverted papilloma, which is characteristic of their neoplastic structure.…”

“…In contrast, sinunasal inverted papillomas histologically show a hyperplasia of the epithelium itself, sometimes even with a varying degree of dysplasia. Furthermore, comparing nasal polyps and inverted papillomas, Guichard et al (24) demonstrated that there is a signi® cantly higher rate of proliferation as well as apoptosis in the latter. Concerning inverted papillomas, cell proliferation was also signi® cantly higher than apoptosis, characterizing their neoplastic structure.…”

“…1 These tumours are characterized by hyperplastic epithelium with an endophytic growth pattern, while the basement membrane is intact and morphologically normal. 2 Nasal polyps are abnormal lesions that originate from any portion of the nasal mucosa or paranasal sinuses.…”
