Episodes of Robotics and Manufacturing Automation Achievements from the Past Decades and Vision for the Next Decade

Abstract: The past 3 decades are characterized by the introduction of digital tools in the manufacturing sector, and by the advent of mechatronics being used for repetitive and fast material handling within logistics. Retrospectively this time is referred as the 3 rd Industrial Revolution. Presently, the cyber-physical systems and cyber-physical production systems are being referenced as substituents of the 4 th Industrial Revolution. The Authors have selected some outstanding episodes within this transition time to hig… Show more

“…Lastly, 𝜃 𝑖 denotes the joint angle from 𝑋 𝑖−1 to 𝑋 𝑖 , in the forward direction of the 𝑍 𝑖 axis (indicating the rotation angle between linkage 𝑖 − 1 and linkage 𝑖). The expression for the homogeneous transformation matrix between two connecting rods adjacent to each other is given by equation (2).…”

“…The gripper is a critical component of a robot, serving as the robot's hand for direct interactions with the outside world, such as touching, picking, grasping, analyzing, and manipulating objects [1] [2]. In industrial settings, dealing with known and rigid objects makes grasping relatively straight forward, with less need for precise force control [3].…”

“…In science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education, particularly at advanced levels, laboratory demonstrations play a significant didactive role, as, on their account, students are able to inspect and test the available technologies in a specific domain. Our time’s megatrend, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), is inevitably changing the way we are acquiring, sharing and transferring knowledge [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Furthermore, robotics is believed to efficiently support our society regarding long-term sustainability [ 4 ].…”
