The demand for implementing robots into our daily lives has surged in recent years, necessitating safe grasping for effective interaction with the environment. However, a majority of researchers rely on commercial grippers for their experimental studies, which are typically expensive and not accessible to everyone. Despite the existence of open-source designs, the assembly process is often challenging and requires modifications to enhance secure grasping. This paper presents a simple, compact, and low-cost gripper to offer an accessible and readily deployable solution for research and education. The gripper utilizes a parallel four-bar linkage mechanism, minimizing the number of components and incorporating off-the-shelf parts for straightforward assembly. Furthermore, to enhance its capabilities, the proposed gripper implements a soft skin tactile sensor on its fingertips. These sensors offer three-directional measurements using Hall effect sensing and embedded silicone. By controlling fingertip force based on information from the tactile sensors, the gripper achieves safe grasping. The gripper is evaluated to grasp daily life objects with different properties such as shapes, sizes, and levels of deformability. Evaluation results showcase the gripper's versatility, enabling it to securely grasp various objects, including fragile items. This outcome underscores the gripper's effectiveness, versatility, and safety in practical use.

The food manufacturing industry, that is both diversified and fragmented, plays a crucial role in economies of all the nations. This review is an approach to provide comprehensive knowledge about the status of use of robots in food processing industries. With advancement in powerful, precise and quick robots, automation has been helping in performing industrial operations rapidly. There are number of modern robotics systems employed in food industries, and they are mostly geared toward the high-volume, long workability and handling single-product line but now emphasis is given on multifunctionality of robots by developing replaceable grippers. The shortage of labours due to young people leaving their nation for better job opportunities in developed or high-income countries, and also in pandemic like situation, this had opened the doors for exploring other options for laborious tasks in important sectors like food processing industry. If robots would be used at larger extent in food processing industry at full capacity, in addition to boosting output, it has the potential to safeguard food supplies in unprecedented circumstances and beyond.

Given the rising popularity of robotics, student-driven robot development projects are playing a key role in attracting more people towards engineering and science studies. This article presents the early development process of an open-source mobile robot platform—named PlatypOUs—which can be remotely controlled via an electromyography (EMG) appliance using the MindRove brain–computer interface (BCI) headset as a sensor for the purpose of signal acquisition. The gathered bio-signals are classified by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) whose results are translated into motion commands for the mobile platform. Along with the physical mobile robot platform, a virtual environment was implemented using Gazebo (an open-source 3D robotic simulator) inside the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, which has the same capabilities as the real-world device. This can be used for development and test purposes. The main goal of the PlatypOUs project is to create a tool for STEM education and extracurricular activities, particularly laboratory practices and demonstrations. With the physical robot, the aim is to improve awareness of STEM outside and beyond the scope of regular education programmes. It implies several disciplines, including system design, control engineering, mobile robotics and machine learning with several application aspects in each. Using the PlatypOUs platform and the simulator provides students and self-learners with a firsthand exercise, and teaches them to deal with complex engineering problems in a professional, yet intriguing way.
