Epigenetic: A new approach to etiology of infertility

Abstract: ABSTRAK ABSTRACTInfertility is a complex disease which could be caused by male and female factors. The etiology from both factors needs further study. There are some approaches to understanding the etiology of infertility, one of them is epigenetic. Epigenetic modifications consist of DNA methylation, histone modifications, and chromatin remodelling. Male and female germinal cells undergo epigenetic modifications dynamically during differentiation into matured sperm and oocyte cells. In a male, the alteration … Show more

“…Epigenetics is described as heritable changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype, which take place with no changes to the underlying DNA sequence mitotically and meiotically [ 160 ]. According to Lestari and Rizki [ 161 ], DNA methylation, histone modifications and chromatin remodeling are the primary epigenetic mechanisms, which also include gene expression regulation. DNA hypomethylation correlates with gene expression, while hypermethylation is correlated with gene silencing.…”

“…These enzymes include processes involving DNMTs, HDACs, histone acetylases (HATs), HMTs, and the methyl-CpG-binding protein (MeCP2). 8 Journal of South Asian Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Volume 15 Issue 1 (January-February 2023) lifestyle factors can have an impact on and alter their epigenome, DNA methylation status, and histone modifications. This is connected to the type of DNA methylation, for instance, during aging.…”

“…The category of factors that influence infertility is a history of reproductive disorders where from the study data that Endometriosis and PCOS (PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome) are associated with impaired spermatogenesis and oogenesis that can lead to infertility (Lestari SW, 2016). PCOS is a condition in which the ovaries produce abnormal amounts of androgens, male sex hormones that are usually present in women in small amounts, the name polycystic ovary syndrome describes the many small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) that form in the eggs (ovaries) (Hopkins, 2021).…”
