Epidermal localization and protective effects of topically applied superoxide dismutase

Abstract: Data from the literature, as well as our previous work, indicate a protective effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in topical application against UV-induced cutaneous damage. In the present article we show that pre-treatment of the skin with SOD protects against PUVA-induced inflammatory reactions not only in murine, but also in human skin. Using fluorescently labelled Cu,Zn SOD, epifluorescence microscopy and digital image processing, we demonstrate that the FITC fluorescence localizes in the stratum corneum … Show more

“…Since Cu, Zn-SOD increases in response to an accumulation of ROS this increase would confirm the protective role of the enzyme against radiation-induced skin damage. In fact, some studies show that the pre-treatment of skin with topical SOD protects the skin from inflammatory reactions induced by UVA rays (12).…”

“…From these results, it is considered that severe oxidative stress due to induced ROS generation, such as that by photooxidative stress, damages the cellular and tissue components of the skin more severely at advancing ages than at younger ages. Therefore, we emphasize that application of antioxidants is useful to protect the skin from accumulated and elevated oxidative damage due to UV light from the sun as the aging process proceeds (41,50,51).…”
