Epidemiology of Warthin's tumour of the parotid gland in an Asian population

Abstract: The incidence of Warthin's tumour is considerable among Asians although there is still male predominance. There is no rising incidence of Warthin's tumour; the trend parallels the declining smoking rate in the population. The lower incidence among ethnic groups with dark skin seems to suggest concomitant genetic factors other than environmental factors alone in histogenesis. Smokers have a 40-fold greater risk than non-smokers of developing a Warthin's tumour.

“…The frequency observed in the literature of WT ranged from 9% to 28%. 11,12 Most bilateral parotid gland tumors are WT and bilateralism occurred in four out of 52 cases in our study permitted the following conclusions. 12 Basal cell adenoma occurred only in the parotid gland.…”

“…4 However, pleomorphic adenoma had been listed universally as the most common tumor in all the studies with a range of 40-72%. 10,14,15 Warthin tumor (13.51%) was the second commonest benign tumor similar to the observation of Chung et al 16 Out of 25 cases of pleomorphic adenomas 18 involved parotid, 4 involved submandibular gland and 3 cases involved minor salivary glands. All the five cases of Warthin tumor affected only the parotid gland, which is similar to the finding reported by Laishram et al 4 In the present series adenoid cystic carcinoma was the most common salivary gland tumor comprising 44.44% cases (4 cases out of 9 malignancies)[ Fig.2].…”

“…However, there is some increased risk for the development of second primary cancers of the oropharynx, thyroid gland and lung, especially for those whose salivary gland cancers were treated with radiotherapy (6). Unlike other head and neck cancers, alcohol and smoking abuse are not associated with increased risk for developing salivary gland neoplasms with the exception of a greatly increased risk and association of smoking with Warthin's tumor (7)(8)(9). One interesting finding, unconfirmed by others, is an elevated risk of salivary gland cancer in women employed as hairdressers and those working in beauty salons (10).…”
