Epidemiology of traumatic injuries to the permanent incisors of 9–12‐year‐old school children in Damascus, Syria

Abstract: This cross-sectional survey was carried out to assess epidemiological data concerning dental injuries to the permanent incisors of Syrian children. It included 1087 children aged 9 to 12 years, of both sexes, randomly selected from public and private primary schools in Damascus. The response rate was 100%. The prevalence of traumatic injuries to the permanent incisors rose from 5.2% at the age of 9 years to 11.7% at the age of 12 years (P = 0.007). The difference in prevalence between boys and girls was not st… Show more

“…For this group and for the 31-40 year-old age group (14.1% of all cases), the most common causes of dentoalveolar traumatic injuries were traffic accidents and aggressions. It has been shown that when the survey includes former dental trauma history 10,11,14,19 , data become cumulative, which means that the older the patient, the greater the probability of trauma occurrence in his/her life, reversing the proportional ratio.…”

“…This variation may be influenced by the type of dentition (primary -30%; permanent -22%) 13 and patients' age (the frequency of dentoalveolar trauma has been shown to vary inversely proportional to age and incidences between 5.2 and 11.7% have been observed in different age groups) 14 . A great part of these studies investigated dental trauma in schoolchildren by means of clinical examinations and questionnaires.…”

“…However, previous studies with permanent teeth showed that a large proportion of enamel and dentine fractures do need treatment. [17][18][19][20] Therefore, minor damage to enamel and dentine should be assessed with caution because an injury may appear minimal at the time of the accident, but may eventually result in pulpal necrosis. 20 TDI are a result of a variety of factors.…”
