Epidemiology of pertussis in adolescents and adults in Turkey

Abstract: Two hundred and fourteen patients who had a cough illness lasting at least 2 weeks were studied to investigate Bordetella pertussis as a cause of prolonged cough in adolescents and adults. Medical history and nasopharyngeal swab specimens for culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were obtained at presentation. Three (1·4%) patients were B. pertussis culture-positive; 15 (7%) were B. pertussis PCR-positive (including the culture-positive patients) and 11 (5·1%) were Bordetella spp. PCR-positive. Symptom c… Show more

“…Infants may also contract diseases from adolescents who have not been vaccinated. In a study involving 214 adolescents with prolonged cough, 7% of the participants had pertussis positivity [19]. Also, seroprevalence studies have shown that immunisations over the course of acellular pertussis were terminated within a mean of 5 years [20].…”

“…However, the prevalence of pertussis has been found to be increased in adolescents and adults with prolonged cough in many LMICs. 46,100,101 Asymptomatic pertussis infections are also common in school children aged 7-15 y old, as showed in a recent Chinese study. 102 Similar to the findings in developed countries, 103 although reported incidences are mostly <1/100 000, true incidences estimated by seroprevalence studies are much higher, especially in adolescents and adults populations.…”

“…The mean prevalence of pertussis was found to be 3% (0% to 6.2%) in adults with cough duration between 2 to 4 weeks in a European multicentre study [ 11 ]. In a study evaluating 214 adolescent and adult patients with cough duration of more than 2 weeks, pertussis PCR was found to be positive in 15 (7%) subjects [ 12 ]. Another study evaluating pertussis seroprevalence in adults, 52 (9.7%) of 538 patients with cough duration for more than 2 weeks suggested that their B. pertussis antibody levels were compatible with acute or recent infection [ 13 ].…”
