Epidemiology of bovine fascioliasis in the Nile Delta region of Egypt: Its prevalence, evaluation of risk factors, and its economic significance

Abstract: Aim:This study focuses on the risk factors associated with the prevalence of Fasciola affecting cattle population in three provinces belonging to the Nile Delta of Egypt and to estimate the economic losses as a result of fascioliasis.Materials and Methods:From January 2015 to end of December 2015, records of 21 farms (4976 cattle) were analyzed to screen the prevalence of fascioliasis among cattle farms, to identify its associated risk factors and its economic impacts on Nile Delta region of Egypt. Results:The … Show more

“…This study was conducted in the eastern region of Nile Delta of Egypt, where the majority of the farmers use Nile River's water for irrigation of their land and drinking purpose of their animals. That's why; ruminant animals in such areas are at high risk of liver flukes endemicity (Haseeb et al, 2002;El-Tahawy et al, 2017). high prevalence could argue the remarkably high prevalence of human fascioliasis in Egypt (Haseeb et al, 2002)…”

“…On the other hand, sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree analysis (Figure 3) reveal complete matching of this study isolates with international records, subsequently, there was no any type of mutations or polymorphisms (as SNPs). This result may be due to that cattle infected mainly by F. gigantica only, in contrast to other ruminants, like sheep, which can infected by F. hepatica and/or F. gigantica, then increasing the possibility of hybridization and cross-mating inside host body, and the following offspring have midway external characters with diverse polidies (4,5,25). The key restraint of this article results is due to F. gigantica isolated from the liver of cattle only in Aqrah city in Kurdistan region of Iraq, thus, in the future it must consider various hosts in different regions of the country.…”
