Epidemiology and survival trend of adult T‐cell leukemia/lymphoma in the United States

Abstract: Background Globally, 5 million to 10 million people are infected with human T‐cell leukemia virus type 1, which causes adult T‐cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in 2% to 5% of the carriers. ATLL is a rare but extremely aggressive malignancy that can be challenging to diagnose. Very little data exist on the incidence patterns of ATLL in the United States. Methods ATLL cases reported to the National Program of Cancer Registries, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program, and the New York State C… Show more

“…Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 causes ATLL in about 5% of the carriers [32]. In the United States, the incidence of ATLL was stable but showed a rising trend in the New York City, which is largely due to non-Hispanic blacks originating from the Caribbean [33]. In our study, the five primary ATLL patients were all Taiwanese.…”

“…Patient samples and primary cells. Samples from NA-ATLL patients, as published (22,23,56), were obtained from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (NY, USA). In addition, samples from 11 HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/Tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) patients (82% female) and 10 asymptomatic HTLV-1-infected individuals (60% female) were studied.…”
