Epidemiology and Etiology of Young Stroke

Abstract: Introduction. Stroke in people under 45 years of age is less frequent than in older populations but has a major impact on the individual and society. In this article we provide an overview of the epidemiology and etiology of young stroke. Methods. This paper is based on a review of population-based studies on stroke incidence that have included subgroup analyses for patients under 45 years of age, as well as smaller community-based studies and case-series specifically examining the incidence of stroke in the y… Show more

“…The same was confirmed in our study, where among other causes arterial dissection and APLAS were also recorded. Small artery occlusion in younger stroke patients is usually associated with tobacco smoking 16 , which corresponded to the proportion of small artery occlusion in our patients and the proportion of smokers in our young patient group (almost half of all patients). This may also be the explanation for the slightly more frequent posterior territory affection.…”

“…Similar percentages were revealed in our study and further corroborated by our CDFI findings of a higher carotid atherosclerosis incidence in men. On the other hand, in young stroke patients, the etiology differs following this order of significance: cardioembolism, arterial dissection, migraine, drug use, use of oral contraceptives (OC), antiphospholipid syndrome (APLAS), inherited coagulation disorders and rare causes of non-atherosclerotic arteriopathies, which combined comprise about one-third of all cases [16][17][18] . The same was confirmed in our study, where among other causes arterial dissection and APLAS were also recorded.…”

“…36 Among other components, the cardiometabolic syndrome can be associated with hypercoagulability and mediated by inflammatory response and interferences in the coagulation process, which may contribute to increased risk for cardiovascular events. 37 Atrial fibrillation, a common cause for cerebral emboli 38 is believed to be under diagnosed in patients with stroke of undetermined cause.…”

“…6 The rate of stroke in this group also overlaps the overall incidence rate described for subjects under the age of 45. 30,31 A cohort study showed that women who experience recurrent spontaneous pregnancy loss or stillbirth are not at higher risk of stroke later in life. 32 We were able to rely heavily on the Nîmes Obstetricans and Haematologist (NOHA) administrative region hospital medical network.…”
