Background: To determine the level of knowledge on human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and vaccination, and the attitude towards HPV vaccination in pediatricians, obstetricians and gynecologists (OBG). Materials and Methods: Participants were administered a 40-question survey, investigating the demographic properties, the knowledge on the HPV infection-vaccination and attitudes towards vaccination. Results: The study enrolled a total of 228 participants (131 pediatricians and 97 OBGs). At a rate of 99.6%, the participants agreed with the fact that the HPV infection was the most common sexually transmitted disease and 33.8% of the participants had the opinion that the HPV vaccination should be administered only in women. The lowest level of HPV vaccine recommendation was among the pediatrics specialists (59.4%, p=0.012). When asked whether they would have their daughters receive HPV vaccination, 79.5% of the participants answered favorably; this rate was 36.7% for the sons. At a rate of 59.5% of the participants thought that the HPV vaccine needed to be included in the national vaccine schedule. Most of the participants (91.6%) had the idea that reduction of the vaccine costs would increase the vaccination frequency. Conclusions: We observed that the consideration of the costs and the prejudices relating to the inefficacy of vaccination as well as the inadequate level of knowledge were involved in the physicians' resistance to HPV vaccination. We believe that the healthcare professionals should be informed adequately to overcome false beliefs, thereby ensuring success of the HPV vaccine upon inclusion in the national vaccine schedule in the future.

Introduction:Human papillomavirus infection is the most common sexual transmitted infection in the world, being associated with different diseases, namely anogenital warts, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis and anal, cervical, and oropharyngeal cancers. Among sexually active people, approximately 1% has anogenital warts, 90% of cases resulting from genotypes 6 and 11. Material and Methods: Patients diagnosed with first episode of anogenital warts from 2008 to 2014 in Lisbon's major venereology clinic were identified, and characterized according to sex, sexual orientation, age, warts location, and number of sexual partners. Results:We observed a statistically significant decrease in first anogenital warts diagnosis among < 19 year old females (r = -0.848; p = 0.016) and a non-statistically significant decrease among < 19 -year-old males and among 20 -24 year old females. Discussion: In October 2008, the quadrivalent vaccine (genotypes 6, 11, 16, 18) was introduced in the Portuguese national vaccination program, targeting 13-year-old females, with a catch-up for 17 year old females. In the women´s group, decrease in first anogenital warts diagnosis is probably related to human papillomavirus vaccination before onset of sexual activity. Conclusion:This study reinforces the importance of national human papillomavirus vaccination program.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection: a Mozambique overview

Human Papillomavirus is agent of the most common sexually transmitted disease which is able to infect mucosal and cutaneous membranes of the anogenital region, upper aerodigestive tract, and other head and neck mucosal regions. Although mainly HPV infection can be asymptomatic and transient, it may persist and give rise to various lesions such as warts, condyloma dysplasia and cancers depending on low or high risk type of HPV infection. Moreover, growing recent evidence suggests a role of this virus in male and female fertility. To date no effective prevention, test, treatment and control strategies are provided for people in developing countries despite the reported high incidence of HPV both in women and men. This paper reviews the more recent literature about HPV infection highlighting epidemiology, related pathologies and possible fertility effects of HPV in male and female with particular attention to the Mozambique context.

Epidemiology and cost of treatment of genital warts in Spain

Abstract: This study provides a first overview of the burden of GW in Spain. A quadrivalent HPV vaccine that prevents HPV 6, 11, 16, 18 related diseases will have the potential to significantly decrease the socio-economic burden associated with GW in Spain.
