Leptospirosis and babesiosis in dogs may be associated. These diseases often have similar symptoms and mask each other, or are asymptomatic, which complicates the diagnosis, significantly worsens the prognosis and reduces the survival of sick animals. Monitoring of the associated course of leptospirosis and babesiosis in dogs makes it possible to study the frequency of this parasitocenosis in dogs and the peculiarities of its course, which is the basis for improving the diagnosis and treatment of sick animals. The aim of the research. Monitor the associated course of leptospirosis and babesiosis in dogs. Methods. The research was conducted in the private veterinary clinic “Vetservice” in Sumy and in the serology department of the Sumy Regional State Laboratory of the Civil Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection. Blood samples were taken from dogs came for treatment to the “Vetservice” clinic. The diagnosis of babesiosis was established directly in the clinic by the results of erythrocyte microscopy in thin smears of peripheral blood of sick dogs stained by Giemsa. The diagnosis of leptospirosis was established in the serology department of the Sumy Regional State Laboratory based on the results of a study of the serum of sick dogs in the microagglutination reaction. The subjects of the study were clinically ill and suspected dogs with the associated course of leptospirosis and babesiosis, as well as blood samples from these animals. Babesium trophozoites were detected in erythrocytes under an immersion microscope, a magnification of ocular 10 x 90, and the presence of antibodies to leptospira was detected by the presence of agglutination of leptospira in microagglutination reaction. Results. In the study of the incidence of dogs associated with leptospirosis and babesiosis during 2014–2019, according to the clinic “Vetservice” found that the number of reported cases of associated leptospirosis and babesiosis annually varies from 9 to 28 cases. This parasitocenosis is registered all year round with peaks in spring and autumn, moderately in summer and rarely in winter. Purebred animals get sick several times more often than non pedigree ones. During the period from 2016 to 2019, the number of diseases in females and males was approximately the same. During the period from 2014 to 2015, males were more often ill. Conclusions. The prevalence of the associated course of leptospirosis and babesiosis in dogs of the Sumy region of Ukraine was determined with the determination of seasonal, breed and sexual dynamics of this parasitocenosis

Leptospiroz; Gram negatif, sporsuz, kapsülsüz ve aerobik bir bakteri olan Leptospira spp.'nin neden olduğu çoklu organ tutulumları ile seyreden zoonoz bir infeksiyon hastalığıdır. Leptospiroz teşhisi için; klinik/otopsi bulguları, mikroskobi, kültür, hayvan deneyleri, seroloji ve PCR (Polimeraz Zincir Reaksiyonu) yöntemlerinden yararlanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, İstanbul ilindeki özel veteriner kliniklerine getirilen leptospiroza karşı aşılanmış köpeklerin idrar örneklerinde Leptospira spp. varlığının hızlı ve duyarlı bir yöntem olduğu bildirilen real-time PCR tekniği ile saptanması ve Leptospira spp. pozitifliği ile idrar yoluna ait semptomlar, yaş ve cinsiyet gibi değişkenlerin istatistiksel ilişkisinin karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya, idrar yolu semptomu olan ve olmayan toplam 100 aşılı köpekten (56 dişi, 44 erkek) alınan idrar örnekleri randomize olarak dahil edilmiştir. Leptospira spp. varlığının belirlenmesi amacı ile alınan idrar örneklerinde DNA ekstraksiyonu ve real-time PCR yöntemi uygulanmıştır. Çalışmaya dahil edilen 100 köpeğe ait idrar örneklerinin 7 (%7) tanesi Leptospira spp. varlığı açısından pozitif bulunmuştur. Saptanan pozitifliklerin gruplara göre düzensiz dağılımı ve olgu sayısının istatistiksel anlamlılığa etki edecek düzeyde yeterli olmayabileceği gibi nedenlerden dolayı; yaş, cinsiyet farklılığı gibi demografik veriler ve semptomu olan veya olmayan köpeklerin PCR pozitiflikleri istatistiksel olarak anlamlı derecede farklı bulunamamıştır. Leptospirozun günümüzdeki öneminin daha açık bir şekilde anlaşılabilmesi, teşhisinde kullanılabilecek en uygun yönteminin belirlenebilmesi, aşılamanın önleyici etkilerinin değerlendirilebilmesi gibi amaçlar ile; daha çok olgu sayısını içeren, prospektif ve tedavi seçeneklerinin de değerlendirildiği geniş araştırmalara gereksinim duyulmaktadır.

Background: Leptospirosis is a significant zoonotic infection caused by Leptospira spirochetes, which are distributed globally. Infection typically occurs through exposure to water or soil contaminated by the urine of mammals, including dogs, cattle, pigs, or rodents. Objectives: The objective of this study was to elucidate the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of leptospirosis cases in Turkey. Methods: In a retrospective review, we analyzed the clinical and laboratory data of all individuals under 18 years diagnosed with leptospirosis at a secondary care center in Southeast Turkey from the beginning of 2020 to the end of 2022. Results: Over the two-year period, 36 confirmed cases of leptospirosis in individuals under 18 were identified. All patients had been engaged in activities at wells in cornfields, assisting their families with irrigation or related to well operations. Of these patients, 3 (8%) resided in urban areas, while 33 (92%) lived in rural settings. None required intensive care, and there were no fatalities reported. The most common symptoms at presentation were fatigue (83%), fever (75%), and nausea/vomiting (75%). Laboratory tests revealed that all patients had positive C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, with a significant portion (61%) showing highly positive results (CRP > 100). Conclusions: In conclusion, leptospirosis should be considered by clinicians when evaluating patients, especially those with risk factors like occupational exposure. Prompt testing for the disease is advisable under these circumstances.
