“…High myopia-associated complications such as retinal detachment, macular lesions, peripapillary deformation and myopia choroidal neovascularization may lead to severe and irreversible visual loss [ 11 ]. Related complications of high myopia will become one of the main causes of visual impairment in the next few decades in the world [ 12 , 13 ]. Jung et al reported that the prevalence of high myopia was 21.6% in 19-year-old males in Seoul in 2010 [ 4 ].…”

Furthermore, the situation is severe in East Asia, especially among students and young adults, with a prevalence of almost 90% [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. A recent meta-analysis showed that the number of patients with myopia worldwide has increased from 1406 million in 2000 to 1950 million in 2010; it is predicted that the number of myopia patients will reach 4758 million by 2050 [10].…”

“…In the year 2000, the prevalence of high myopia was about 2.7% of the world population (163 million people) and it is predicted that by 2050 there will be about 938 million people suffering from high myopia (9.8% of the world population) [1]. High myopia may result in irreversible visual loss due to the retinal detachment, choroidal neovascularization, macular atrophy, glaucoma, cataract and other complications [1][2][3][4].…”
