“…Cystic echinococcosis is one of the most widespread parasitic zoonoses in the Mediterranean region and constitutes a serious public health problem (Battelli et al 2002;Ecca et al 2002). As in other countries of the region (e. g. Katic-Radivojevic and Popovic 1997;Todorov and Boeva 1999;Sotiraki et al 2003;Varcasia et al 2007;Christodoulopoulos et al 2008), prevalence of cystic echinococcosis according to abattoir surveys ranged from 5% to 75% in Albania, with sheep and cattle usually presenting higher rates of infection than goats and swine (Moskvin 1958;Èrhardova et al 1960;Dizdari 1971;Meshi and Veliu 1973;Melonashi 1975;Papajani 1980;Pandeli 1983;Pepa 1986;Zanaj 1997). In a retrospective survey based on surgical cases and autopsy findings, the incidence of human cystic echinococcosis in Albania was estimated as 2.05 per 100,000 inhabitants for the years 1958-1987 (Zanaj and Elezi 1998).…”

“…Cerebral coenurosis in small ruminants is still present in countries of North Africa, the Middle East and Asia (Sharma and Chauhan 2006) and recent outbreaks have been described in Switzerland (Schweizer et al 2006), Italy (Varcasia et al 2006, Scala et al 2007) and Greece (Christodoulopoulos 2007, Christodoulopoulos et al 2008.…”

“…In high infections, mortality may occurs, as described by Scala et al (2016) in central Sardinia, Italy, where an acute outbreak of T. hydatigena cysticercosis occurred, causing mortality in 5 of 21 (23.8%) female lambs. In Greek slaughtered sheep, the infection level due to C. tenuicollis was 29.4% (CHRISTODOULOPOULOS et al, 2008). The infection levels in small ruminant carcasses in Brazil are high.…”
