Prevalence of this congenital CL/P deformity is reported as 0.5-2 per 1000 live births depending on the country's population.Cleft lip and palate is more frequent in Asian countries (2.1 in 1000), as compared to African and American countries.This work was carried out at, over a period of 5 years. The study was approved by the Research and Ethics Committee of the hospital. A total number of 1800 patients including primary and secondary cleft lip and palate were investigated. The details of the subjects in terms of history, clinical features and haematological investigations were recorded on an investigator-designed proforma, after obtaining an informed consent from the patient.From a total of 2800 cases, 40 children with CL ± P were examined between the study periods. According to this incidence, the confidence interval by the probability 95% was 1.9-2.34 per 1000 live births.The age of patients ranged from 1 day to 15 years. Majority of the cases were females. It as been found that CLP were more common representing followed by CL, CP and rare cleft in both sexes.

Background: This study investigated the prevalence of lip and palate clefts, need for reoperation and primary surgery in unrepaired patients younger than 18 years old in Zanjan province, northwest of Iran. Methods: All urban and rural healthcare centers and the education department of Zanjan province were informed about this project. After identifying all patients with cleft lip and palate, they were sent to the plastic surgery clinic of our hospital. Their data were gathered, including sex, age, clinical classification, surgical modality, complications, surgery satisfaction and un-repaired patients. Results: A total of 87,356 people were examined by social workers. Among them 120 children and adolescents had cleft lip and palate (1.37 per 1000). 59 (49.1%) patients had cleft lip and palate, 35 (29.1%) patients had only cleft lip and 26 (21.6%) patients had only cleft palate. 25 patients (20.8%) had not done surgery (detection rate was 2.86 per 10,000). Secondary surgery was done in 39 patients (41.05%). In spite of a referral health system in Iran, 25 children with cleft lip had not been operated. Conclusion: Although most of the identified patients had been operated before, almost half of them had to undergo surgery again. Given the lack of studies on this topic in Iran, our findings can form the basis for further studies to precisely identify the roots of cleft lip and palate and properly plan to decrease its risk factors. Further studies are needed to identify reasons of missed detections and why primary surgeries are not satisfying.

ObjectiveThe study was conducted to know the incidence and trends of orofacial clefts between 1st January 2011 and 31st August 2016 in Mysuru, Karnataka; and to describe the demographic patterns.Materials and methodsThis is a retrospective, hospital-based study. Data were retrieved from multiple sources like Parturition books, Neonatal intensive care unit records, baby and mothers case records archived in medical records department of Cheluvamba Hospital, a Tertiary Care Government Hospital, attached to Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, Mysore, Karnataka, between 1 January 2011 and 31 August 2016. All subjects with CL ± P were included in the study. Data were collected using semi-structured proforma, designed based on the review of the literature. Prior to the study, approval of the Institutional Ethics Committee was obtained. Collected data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis using SPSS version 21 (SPSS Inc.).ResultsA total of 59 children with CL ± P were born between 1 January 2011 and 31 August 2016 among 77667 births (Male: 36,625; Females: 41042). Hence the incidence of orofacial clefts in this hospital was 0.76/1000 births/year. Incidence in boys was 0.71/1000 births and in girls it was 0.78/1000 births (p < 0.7). Distribution of CL ± P showed that cleft lip with palate were more prevalent, which was 64.4%. 54.2% of the female child had clefts. Pierre-Robin syndrome was the most common associated malformation.ConclusionThis study indicates that CL ± P are the most common types of orofacial clefts. Adequate ante-natal history in birth records is not been given critical importance, with lack of parental counseling.
