Epidemiological evaluation of apical periodontitis prevalence in an urban Brazilian population

Abstract: The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) in an urban Brazilian population according to gender, age group and tooth type. Data were collected from clinical files containing the medical and dental histories and periapical radiographs of 1,126 patients treated at the School of Dentistry at Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro between March 2000 and December 2010. A total of 15,724 periapical radiographs were evaluated. All the radiographs were evaluated by two independent,… Show more

“…Therefore, data from endodontic epidemiological surveys may contribute to the improvement of this knowledge 7 . Investigations on the prevalence of pulp and periradicular diseases in the Brazilian population produced few studies [8][9][10][11] and most of them were conducted exclusively based on radiographic assessments for the diagnosis of such infections. Considering the importance of epidemiological investigations, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of pulp and periradicular diseases diagnosed in a Brazilian subpopulation, correlating this information to gender, age group and most affected teeth.…”

“…Of the total number of teeth studied, 0.97% in 18.3% of radiographs have an associated apical lesion, figure which tends to decrease with age, unlike other reports where it goes from a 50% prevalence at age 50 to a 62% prevalence at age 60 and over (8) , or in Brazil with a lesion prevalence of 7.87% (9) , which is explained here because patients prefer extraction to retreatment or apical surgery. The presence of apical lesions indicates an increased need for treatment, since it is necessary to redo the endodontic treatment or apical surgery, which may entail an unfavorable prognosis for the tooth treated and increase costs.…”
